T47: the modern threaded bottom bracket

Quick answer

T47 is a modern threaded bottom bracket with an M47 × 1.0 thread. It takes the large diameter of a PressFit 30 but threads it in, combining wide-shell stiffness with threaded reliability (no press-fit creak). It accepts 24, 28.99 (DUB) and 30 mm spindles. It has two variants: Inboard (wide shell 85.5–86.5 mm) and Outboard (narrow shell 68–73 mm).

T47 is the industry's answer to the creaking press-fit: the same wide-shell stiffness, but threaded so it can be serviced and stays quiet. That's why many high-end brands are adopting it.

What is it?

T47 appeared in 2015 (Chris King and Argonaut) to kill press-fit creaking without going back to BSA's narrow shell. It threads into a wide shell, so it houses stout 30 mm spindles with decent bearing walls and removes like any threaded unit.

What fits

Thanks to its large diameter, it accepts virtually any modern spindle: 24 mm (Shimano), DUB (28.99 mm) and 30 mm, with the right cup. It needs a specific splined tool to install (not the BSA one).

Common mistake: Thinking a BSA frame accepts T47 (the M47 thread is completely different), or believing T47 is one size: there are Inboard (wide shell) and Outboard (narrow shell) variants, not interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

Do T47 and BSA use the same thread?

No. BSA is 1.37 inch × 24 TPI; T47 is metric M47 × 1.0. They are not interchangeable.

Why did brands like Trek switch to T47?

To eliminate press-fit creaking and tolerance problems without losing wide-shell stiffness.

Does T47 accept Shimano 24 mm cranks?

Yes, with T47 cups that carry reducer bearings for a 24 mm spindle.
